Non-native invasive plants pose serious threats to native ecosystems, biodiversity, and the long-term health of forests, fields, streams, and other natural areas.


Understanding invasive plants is an essential part of learning the landscape. When aggressive species spread unchecked, they can crowd out native wildflowers, shrubs, and trees, reduce habitat for birds and pollinators, weaken forest structure, and alter the health and beauty of the places we value.


Through Tree Lovers School, Carrie helps people recognize invasive plants, understand their impact, and respond with greater awareness and care.

Why Invasive Plants Matter

Many invasive plants were originally introduced because they were attractive, fast-growing, or easy to maintain. Over time, some of these species escaped cultivation and began spreading into forests, roadsides, streambanks, parks, and home landscapes. Once established, they can:

  • Outcompete native plants for light, water, and nutrients

  • Reduce biodiversity

  • Smother shrubs and trees

  • Disrupt habitat for birds, insects, and other wildlife

  • Contribute to erosion and ecological imbalance

  • Make restoration much more difficult and costly over time

 

In some places, invasive plants can also affect visibility, fire risk, access, and the long-term safety and health of managed landscapes. In addition, invasive and non-native plants often fail to support the insects that native ecosystems depend on. While they may appear healthy or attractive, they do not provide the same food sources for caterpillars and other insects that birds rely on — especially during nesting season.

This can have cascading effects throughout the ecosystem, reducing food availability for birds and other wildlife and weakening the overall resilience of the landscape.

Learning to
See the Problem

One of Carrie’s central goals is to help people appreciate where they live more deeply — and to understand that appreciation carries responsibility.

When people learn to recognize the plants around them, they also begin to notice what does not belong, what is spreading too aggressively, and what may be threatening the balance of a landscape. In that way, plant identification becomes more than a skill. It becomes a way of understanding the condition of the land.

Awareness of invasive plants can open the door to larger questions about:

  • Habitat destruction

  • Streambank erosion

  • Questionable clearing or building choices

  • Flooding and runoff

  • Climate change

  • The health of public and private land

 

These issues are connected, and learning to see plants more clearly helps people see those connections more clearly as well.

Carrie’s
Approach

Carrie has spent many years studying invasive species and participating in eradication and restoration efforts. Through classes, talks, writing, plant walks, and educational videos, she works to help communities understand both the problem and the possibility of repair.

Her approach is grounded in the belief that education should lead to stewardship. That stewardship may take many forms:

  • Learning to identify invasive plants on your own property

  • Choosing native plants more carefully in home landscapes

  • Supporting conservation organizations

  • Volunteering on restoration projects

  • Helping others understand why these issues matter

  • Request that your local nursery stock more native plants and avoid selling invasives

From Awareness to Stewardship

Communities that understand invasive plants are better equipped to protect native habitats, restore biodiversity, and care for the landscapes they share.

Whether the setting is a backyard, a public park, a historic site, a roadside, or a stretch of forest, small acts of awareness and stewardship matter. Learning to identify invasive species is one important step toward protecting the natural resources and wild places that make a region healthy, beautiful, and resilient.
